Academic Tuition
As a tutor and teacher with over a decade of experience teaching science, mathematics, computer science among other subjects to hundreds of students around the world. Using my expert knowledge of physics, chemistry and programming that I developed during my 1st-Class Honours Degree and Masters in Physics and Astrochemistry from University College, London I have brought a depth of teaching to help student of all age and abilities.
Subjects
Maths
Mathematics is an often misunderstood subject that many parents and students alike have a difficulty with, I delight in teaching maths and seeing the boost of confidence it gives students especially when they are having difficulty.
My teaching style for maths is based on years of experience and while it varies from student to student, I put a strong emphasis on mastering the fundamentals of whatever topic at whatever age. Once the cognitive burden of recalling information is lifted, students are much more free to explore, understand and sometimes even enjoy the problems and world that mathematics produces. For young students, this means taking intensive immersion in skills such as number bonds, multiplication tables and clear working out and combining them with creative and varied problems. For older students it means structured approach to problems, memorisation of crucial formulae and stressing discipline and combining this with unorthodox techniques such as writing problems instead of solving them, or applying the topic at hand to approximately solve tricky problems in science, statistics, economics or business.
Outside of traditional syllabuses, I like to work on my own mathematic ideals especially those which cross over with music, visual art and games.
Science
I was fascinated with science and the natural world since I was young and my parents gave a me a poster about the cosmos for my bedroom wall. I’ve helped hundreds of students gain a renewed enthusiasm for science, receive high marks in examinations while expanding and deepening their understanding of the vast wonders of the subject.
Science can be commonly considered remote from everyday mundane activities, something that can only be conducted by someone with specialist equipment, credentials and a lab coat. I teach my students that scientists, like myself, are regular people and that regular people can be scientists too! I emphasise the core essence of science: hypothesising, experimenting, deep thought and the comparison of the explanatory powers of competing theories - the scientific attitude, if you will.
That being so, I understand that students still have to pass exams so over years I’ve built up a strong understanding of how to help students to memorise, integrate and apply the wide amount of knowledge presented by secondary and high school education.
Alongside tutoring and teaching, I’ve written my own science courses for a STEM education NGO, Phoenix Space, which has been taught to hundreds of students in several countries. These courses aim to teach the key facts, modes of thinking and inquisitive attitudes needed in STEM to those whose education has been disrupted due to displacement from their homes.
Programming
I regularly support students of all ages in programming and robotics projects in Python, Scratch, Arduino as well as supervising projects using AI and machine learning.
